Test Corrections and Retake Practices
Recognizing that students demonstrate mastery at different rates, Lake Zurich High School offers opportunities for reassessment, including test corrections and retakes of summative assessments. As Rick Wormeli stated, "The goal is that all students learn the content, not just the ones who can learn on the uniform timeline."
Types of Summative Remediations:
- Test Corrections: Students correct answers on multiple choice or short answer assessments and explain the correct answers.
- Retake: Students retake the same assessment or a different one assessing the same standards, typically involving short answers, essays, and interpreting charts or graphs.
Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, the following standardized practices will be implemented for test corrections and retakes at Lake Zurich High School:
- College Prep Courses: Students will be allowed two summative retakes per semester.
- Honors Courses: Students will be allowed one summative retake per semester.
- Additional Support: Meetings with parents, teachers, and division heads will be held for students who need more opportunities to learn material in a different way, utilizing the multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) process; there will be an increased focus on individual summative performance as compared to prior school years.
- Points Recovery: Test corrections will receive half points back, while retakes can earn up to full points (and replace the previous summative grade).
- Eligibility: Any student can request a retake, regardless of their current grade.
- Formative Work: All formative work must be completed to qualify for a retake.
- Timeline: Retakes must be completed within 10 school days of receiving the summative assessment results.
AP Courses and Dual Credit: AP courses will follow the above guidelines unless AP requirements differ. Dual Credit courses will adhere to cooperating college guidelines.
Essays, Presentations, Projects: These assessments have built-in remediation opportunities. Teachers will work with students and families to ensure learning is completed due to their long-term nature.
