Social Media Safety

5/4/26

Dear Lake Zurich High School Parents/Guardians and Students,

These days, teens on average are spending 4 to 5 hours a day on social media.  And, during all this time, they are exposed to threats and dangers they are not prepared to confront – including cyberbullying, sexual harassment, and hate speech.  To better protect our students, we have invited the Organization for Social Media Safety to our campus on May 6, 2026 for a parent workshop and a day of optional student assemblies focused on social media safety.

That day we will also have evening and morning sessions available for parents, through zoom.  Please click the link below for more information about either the evening or morning sessions.  It is here you will find the Meeting ID and Passcode.

We wanted to let you know that these special student presentations will include an age-appropriate discussion of some mature subject matter.  In referencing these issues, the Organization for Social Media Safety intends to teach our students (1) about some of the various, serious social media-related dangers they are likely to encounter and (2) how to either avoid the dangers and/or most safely respond to them.

Specifically, the presentation will include discussion of the following social media-related dangers:

  • Violence
  • Cyberbullying
  • Mental Health Disorders (including eating disorders, body image issues, depression and suicide)
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Hate Speech
  • Sexting
  • Human Trafficking

The Organization for Social Media Safety is the first consumer protection organization focused exclusively on social media.  They provide their social media safety presentations at schools all across the country, advocate for public policies that improve social media safety, and develop technology to provide real-time protection against any and all social media related dangers.   They are advised by a panel of experts that include educators, psychologists, physicians, and technologists.  If you would like to learn more about them, you can refer to their website at www.ofsms.org or contact them directly at contact@ofsms.org or 855-446-3767.

If you have any questions about the presentation, please contact Brittany Bott-Rife, at Brittany.bottrife@lz95.org.

Sincerely,

John L. Walsh
