Attendance
Attendance
Report Attendance via Phone at (847) 438-5162 OR in ParentVUE
Parents and guardians can access daily attendance information through eSchool. As a reminder, the following absence reasons would be considered excused:
-
Illness
-
Family emergency
-
Circumstances that cause reasonable concern to the parent or guardian for the safety or health of the student
-
Observance of a religious holiday
-
Death in the immediate family
-
Visits for College/Career exploration
-
Other situations approved by the Board of Education or their designee
There are other reasons for absence that would be considered unexcused. In those cases of unexcused absences, the student may not be allowed to make up any academic work missed. Examples of unexcused absences include, but are not limited to, the following:
-
Oversleeping
-
Working
-
Vacation
-
Missing the bus
-
Leaving the building without authorization
-
Other situations as determined by the building administration
Parents are responsible for ensuring their students arrive to school on time either by being at the designated bus stop or directly at the building in ample time to begin their day. Frequent tardiness will result in direct contact from the school building staff.
For more information about student attendance, parents/guardians can refer to the Parent-Student Handbook (Chapter 2: Curriculum and Attendance)
Unexcused Absence Interventions
Class Period Absences
A student is considered unexcused for a single period during the school day in the following ways:
-
When a teacher marks the student absent, and a parent has not called the LZHS attendance office (see the Parent-Student Handbook on what is considered an excused absence).
-
During a study hall class, when a student chooses not to go to their study hall classroom, but does not scan into a valid resource room (Library, Math Resource Center, Writing Center, etc).
-
When a student scans into a resource space and leaves.
-
When a student scans into a resource space, but is on a No Resource restriction.
Students may view their attendance by following the steps below:
-
Login to your StudentVUE account (If you do not remember your User ID or password, email support@lz95.net )
-
Click on MyAccount
-
Click on Home
-
Click on Attendance
Students may “clear” an absence that was marked in error by following the steps below:
-
If you believe you were marked unexcused from a class in error, please email your teacher about the absence in question. Your teacher can contact the Attendance Office directly to adjust your attendance record, if needed. The absence will then be corrected.
-
If you were working with a different teacher, meeting with a counselor, coach, etc. during your class time, please email the teacher, counselor, coach, etc. who you were working with about the absence in question. Your teacher, counselor, coach, etc. can contact the Attendance Office directly to adjust your attendance record, if needed. The absence will then be corrected.
-
If you are marked unexcused due to an illness, medical appointment, funeral, or other excused reason, please ask your parent/guardian to call the Attendance Office at (847) 438-5162 to correct your attendance. The absence will then be corrected See the Parent-Student Handbook for more information on what is considered an excused and unexcused absences.
Serving an Assigned Intervention
Students are expected to attend every class each day. Consistent attendance is essential for staying on track academically and avoiding falling behind. The purpose of an unexcused absence intervention is to set aside time for students to make up the classroom time and work missed.
Unexcused and Unverified Consequences:
-
1–2 U/UNV: Students will be invited to attend office hours with their teacher to support the learning that was missed due to the student's absence.
-
3 U/UNV: Attendance at office hours becomes mandatory. Additionally, an email will be sent home to inform the student’s parent or guardian, with the Deans' Office copied on the communication.
-
4+ U/UNV: The student will be referred to the Deans’ Office for individualized problem-solving and further interventions.
Once assigned, students will be expected to serve an unexcused absence intervention. Students can serve an intervention in the Student Support Center (SSC) Room (in the Deans’ Office) during the time determined by the Dean. Students may not serve during their study hall period as that is considered an academic period.
Tardy Interventions
Tardy Interventions
Students are expected to arrive on time to each of their classes. "On time" means being in the classroom before the bell rings. The start of class includes essential information and instruction, and arriving late can disrupt the learning environment for others.
Interventions are additionally assigned for students who accumulate several tardies to class. Again, interventions are assigned for students to set aside time to make up work missed from being late to class. See below for tardy intervention guidelines:
-
1–2 Tardies: Students will be invited to attend office hours with their teacher to reinforce expectations and ensure academic support.
-
3 Tardies: Attendance at office hours becomes mandatory. Additionally, an email will be sent home to inform the student’s parent or guardian.
-
4 Tardies: Students must attend office hours. An email will be sent to the parent or guardian, with the Deans' Office copied on the communication.
-
5 or More Tardies: The student will be referred to the Deans’ Office for individualized problem-solving and further interventions.
The reader is referred to the Unexcused Absence Interventions dropdown (above) for more detailed information on how to serve an assigned intervention.
Student Support Center (SSC) Expectations
Student Support Center (SSC) Expectations
The following expectations shall be followed for any student in the Student Support Center (SSC) Room:
-
Students may eat lunch in the Student Support Center while serving an intervention; students must arrive to the Student Support Center on time (or no later than 5 minutes after the start of the period if buying a lunch).
-
Students are not allowed to serve an intervention during a study hall period as study hall is a required class (as noted above, Unexcused Absence Interventions)
-
Students must scan into the iPad located at the front desk in the Deans' Office
-
Students should work quietly on homework, studying or reading
-
Cell phones should be put into the cell phone pocket holder; IPads should be used for academic purposes only
-
Any student who is unable to meet SSC expectations OR who is being disruptive to the learning environment will be asked to leave by the Student Support Center Supervisor - and the intervention will not be marked as served
NOTE: Freshman students will serve an intervention during their 20 minute lunch time, and are still expected to attend FAME.
Dean's Office Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Who may use Visitor parking spaces?
A: Visitor spots are for parents or community members who do not have a parking sticker. Parking violations are recorded. Violations may result in students being ticketed, towed, having off-campus ID pulled, losing eligibility to park on campus the following school year, or other consequences as designated by the Dean.
Q: What should students do if someone is in their parking space?
A: Students should follow the steps below if someone is in their space:
-
Stay in the car
-
Call the Deans’ Office at 847-540-4108
-
State their name, parking spot number and the license plate of the car in their assigned spot; students may leave a voicemail if there is no answer
-
Students will be told where they may park
-
Once their space is free, students will receive a pass from the Deans’ Office to move their car back into their assigned spot
Q: What happens if students don’t serve assigned interventions?
A: If a student fails to serve an intervention after problem-solving with the Deans', additional or alternative interventions may be assigned. Additional interventions might include the following:
-
Restrictions from obtaining a parking pass
-
Restrictions on senior/junior off-campus privileges
-
Resource space restrictions
-
Social Probation, which may prevent students from the following:
-
Attending dances
-
Attending sporting events (as a spectator)
-
Attending plays/musicals (as a spectator)
-
Attending other high school social events (homecoming events, prom, etc.)
-
-
Other privileges removed, as determined by the Deans
NOTE: If a ticket is purchased for any social event (athletic event, dance, etc.), and students are on social probation - the price of the ticket will not be refunded.
Q: Which doors may students access during the school day?
A: All students must enter the building at either door #29 (the main entrance by the security desk) or door #14 (bus drop off/pick up). Students must exit through door #29 or door #6 after 3:12 PM if they are not staying for Office Hours. Students who ride the bus may exit through doors #13, 14, or 15 after 3:12 PM. Additionally, any attempt to disable or tamper with the alarm will result in additional interventions assigned by the Deans.
